Progress shots on one of my latest projects! I’ve always wanted to make musical instruments, my uncle restored old pump organs back in the day and it always got my imagination running.
This is a bowed lyre, an ancient instrument, and a varient once played in Viking culture. (Note the Mjölnir sounding hole!) This one is going to be 3 stringed and will hopefully have a gutteral cello sound to it once I’m done. Assuming everything works out! 😥 I have all but one part cut and I’m now trying to work out the finer points of kerf cut wood bending… Any one with experience out there? Would love pointers as my first test bend caused a lot of fiber to tear on the outside of the bend…it might have been too thick, 6mm, I’m trying 4mm tonight.. The wood is Red Oak.
